About Amie

I’m Amie Nugent-Hankins, a Teacher of the Visually Impaired and special education advocate with more than 25 years of experience supporting children with visual impairments, deaf-blindness, and neurological/cortical visual impairment (N/CVI). My work combines professional expertise with personal understanding to help families and educators recognize how the brain processes vision and learning. Through Insightful Advocacy, I guide teams in building clear communication, practical supports, and inclusive educational plans that allow every child to reach their full potential.

Advocacy & Understanding Your Educational Rights

Visual impairments and related conditions like deaf-blindness and N/CVI are low-incidence disabilities, which means many schools simply haven’t had the training or experience to fully understand them. I help families navigate IEPs, assessments, and school communication with clarity and confidence. Together, we make sure your child’s unique needs are recognized, their strengths are highlighted, and their learning is meaningfully supported.

Understanding Visual and Multisensory Needs

Every child’s brain processes vision and sensory information differently. This section explains how conditions like N/CVI, deaf-blindness, and other visual impairments affect learning and interaction. You’ll find simple explanations, key terms, and trusted resources that help families and educators understand how the brain “sees” and how to support meaningful visual access.
